What Is Alyssa's Law?

Alyssa's Law is legislation aimed at enhancing school safety by reducing law enforcement response times during emergencies. It mandates that public elementary and secondary schools be equipped with silent panic alarms directly linked to law enforcement agencies. This ensures that in critical situations, such as medical emergencies or active on-campus incidents, authorities can be promptly notified, facilitating a swift response.

This law is in memory of Alyssa Alhadeff, a 14-year-old student whose life was tragically taken during the 2018 mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida. The law has already been implemented in Florida, New York, New Jersey, Tennessee and Texas.

Alyssa's Law Requirements

Currently, Alyssa's Law has been enacted in several states, including Florida, New Jersey, New York, Oklahoma, Utah, Tennesee, and Texas. Each state has specific requirements, but the core mandate remains the installation of silent panic alarms to expedite law enforcement response during emergencies.

The school staff is also required to be trained on how to use these alarms effectively. The objective of Alyssa’s Law is to provide a rapid and efficient means for staff and students to notify authorities during an emergency, thereby reducing response times and potentially saving lives.

Emergency Response Applications Must Include:
  • Administrative Access to Critical Information
  • Silent Panic Alarm System
  • Real-Time Communication Between First Responders
